Taller Sumaq Casa is an Arequipa workshop producing cushion covers and small household textiles. It took the Buy Small pledge because the owners wanted more of their purchasing budget to reach independent makers and neighborhood suppliers rather than defaulting to large catalogues. They set a target of directing at least one in five supplier dollars to independent businesses and began recording supplier type alongside each purchase. The change led them to source packaging from a nearby family-run printer and to split some material orders between two small shops. During its first six months, 23 percent of supplier spending went to independent businesses, compared with 14 percent in the preceding six months. The owners say the process takes more planning, particularly when different suppliers have different lead times, but it has also created useful backup options. Taller Sumaq is keeping quality and reliable delivery as requirements; the pledge is not a shortcut around them. Its aim is to make small-business purchasing a deliberate part of routine operations.
