Our story

Northline Repair Co-op repairs commuter bicycles and sells practical parts for year-round riders. Co-owner Maya Chen took the Buy Small pledge because the shop wanted its purchasing choices to support other independent businesses in the region. The team now tracks supplier dollars each quarter and aims to direct at least one in five dollars to independent suppliers. It added three small Canadian distributors to its quote list and began consolidating orders so that shipping costs would not automatically favor a national chain. Mechanics also report which parts are reliable, helping purchasing decisions reflect repair quality as well as price. In the first half-year, 23 percent of supplier spend went to independent businesses, compared with 15 percent previously. One Winnipeg parts maker now supplies a locally produced rack mount that the shop recommends for winter bikes. Maya says the pledge gave staff a measurable goal without requiring them to ignore budgets. The co-op reviews the figure every quarter and shares the result at its member meeting.
