Our story

Mandla Mavuno Foods produces spice blends and pantry sauces for independent grocers in Durban. Founder Zanele Dlamini joined the Buy Small pledge because she wanted her own purchasing choices to support the smaller makers she hoped would stock her products. The business now tracks supplier spend and aims to direct at least one in five rand to independent suppliers where quality and availability meet its needs. In the latest six-month review, 24 percent of external purchasing spend went to small local businesses, including a label printer, a jar supplier, and a family-run transport service. Zanele says the relationships have improved communication: the label printer can accommodate short test runs, while the transport provider flags route changes early. The company still buys some standardized inputs from larger distributors when consistency or food-safety requirements call for it. The pledge is not a quota at any cost; it is a prompt to look beyond the default vendor list and give independent suppliers a fair chance to quote.
