Our story

Cobre y Nopal joined Buy Small to make independent suppliers a deliberate part of its growth. The Oaxaca City workshop makes home decor combining copper details with cactus-fibre cord, and it wanted its purchasing to strengthen the local network around its craft. The owners listed recurring purchases and began asking smaller workshops and independent makers for quotes on packaging, fittings, and woven components. They set a target of sending at least one in every five supplier pesos to independent businesses. In the first two quarters, the share reached 24 percent, including orders from four suppliers the studio had not worked with before. One new supplier suggested a sturdier cord finish that reduced product returns from 7 to 4 in a sample run of 60 pieces. Founder Marisol Santiago says the pledge encouraged them to look beyond familiar vendors while still checking quality and delivery times. The studio records supplier spending monthly and discusses the results at its planning meeting. It hopes to expand the independent share as production grows.
