Cedar Thread Repair is a Halifax business that mends outdoor clothing and sells repair kits. It took the No Surprise Fees pledge after customers ordering kits from outside the city were sometimes unsure whether the displayed price included postage and packing. The business wanted people to know the full amount before committing, especially students and families ordering low-cost items. It revised its checkout to show shipping choices, packing costs, and the final total on one screen before payment. For phone orders, staff now read back the total and note any optional service separately. In a 12-week check, 73 of 76 online orders went through without a follow-up question about added charges; before the change, 18 of 65 orders had prompted such questions. The team also found that transparent shipping options reduced abandoned baskets for customers who chose to collect locally. Cedar Thread says the pledge is about making the decision fair and understandable, even when delivery itself is not free.
