Our story

Cedar & Finch Workshop makes compact furniture and repairable household pieces in Halifax. Managing director Morgan LeBlanc took the Buy Small pledge after noticing that the workshop’s purchasing habits favored large catalogs, even when nearby independent suppliers could meet the same need. The team mapped its regular spending, identified local hardware, upholstery, and finishing-material vendors, and began asking them for quotes before defaulting to national distributors. The pledge did not mean choosing a local supplier at any price; staff compare quality, lead time, and total cost, then record why they choose each source. In the first six months, 22 percent of the workshop’s supplier spending went to independent businesses, up from 14 percent. Two new local vendors now supply recurring materials, and one has helped the workshop test a lower-waste finish. LeBlanc says the exercise made purchasing more deliberate and gave the team better visibility into where its materials come from.
